CHOOSING THE RIGHT PROGRAM FOR YOU

Choosing the Right Program for You

Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to take your surfing skills to the next level, selecting the right program can make all the difference in your surfing journey. Here’s a guide to help you choose the best surfing program tailored to your needs and goals.

1. Determine Your Skill Level

Before choosing a program, it’s essential to accurately assess your current surfing ability. Programs are typically designed for specific skill levels, ranging from beginner to advanced.

During a surfer’s skills progression, they will advance through 4 stages of development. The amount of time that it takes to move through the stages depends on the student as everyone progresses at their own pace.

Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Level 1: Beginner – You’ve never surfed before or have minimal experience. You’ll need to learn basic techniques, safety protocols, and ocean awareness.
  • Level 2: Intermediate – An area that students can expect to spend a lot of time in. This is where surfers become independent, and start to develop consistency in their successes.
  • Level 3: Advanced – Surfers have made the most difficult step and have become fully independent surfers. They have progressed from riding straight towards the beach to comfortably surfing down the line in either direction. Some surfers will remain at this level for their entire lives and enjoy surfing intermediate-advanced breaks around the world.
  • Level 4: Performance – Surfers are comfortable in waves up to head high in all conditions and have the skills to push their surfing in bigger conditions under the guidance of coaches. Can read the ocean well and demonstrate good positioning and wave selection the majority of the time.

2. Consider Program Types

Different programs offer various structures and focus areas. Consider what type of learning environment suits you best:

  • Surf Camps: Offer immersive experiences where you can focus intensely on learning and improving over a few days to weeks. Great for beginners and intermediates who want a concentrated learning experience.
  • Daily Classes: Perfect for those with a busy schedule who prefer gradual progress. These classes are offered most days and can be booked at your convenience.
  • Private Lessons: Ideal for personalized attention, allowing instructors to tailor lessons specifically to your needs and goals.
  • Club Sessions: For intermediate surfers who are looking for consistency to continue to progress all summer long. Often meets once or twice a week.

3. Evaluate Instructors and Facilities

The quality of your instructors and the facilities available can significantly impact your learning experience:

  • Certifications and Experience: Look for programs with certified, experienced instructors who have a track record of effectively teaching students at your skill level.
  • Instructor-to-Student Ratio: Smaller ratios often mean more personalized attention and faster progress.
  • Facilities: Evaluate the equipment provided, such as surfboards and wetsuits, and the quality and safety of the location where lessons are held.

4. Assess the Program’s Focus

Each program may emphasize different aspects of surfing. Consider what’s most important for you:

  • Technique and Form: If you’re a beginner, ensuring the program focuses on proper form is crucial.
  • Ocean Safety and Awareness: Understanding the ocean environment is critical, especially for beginners.
  • Advanced Skills and Competition: If you’re looking to compete, ensure the program offers training in advanced skills and competition strategy. (Grom Team)

5. Set Clear Goals

Having clear goals can help guide your choice. Do you want to:

  • Learn the basics and feel comfortable in the water?
  • Improve specific techniques or maneuvers?
  • Prepare for competition?

Once you know what you’re aiming for, you can select a program that aligns with your objectives.

By taking these steps, you’ll be well on your way to choosing the right surfing program that not only meets your current needs but also sets you up for future success on the waves. Happy surfing! 🌊🏄‍♂️
