Hawaiian Culture

Gave the World Surfing

Hawaiian culture has a rich history and deep connection to the ocean, which has given the world the gift of surfing. This ancient sport, known as he’e nalu, was initially practiced by the Polynesians who settled in Hawaii over a thousand years ago. Surfing was more than just a pastime; it was a deeply spiritual activity, often reserved for royalty and used as a way to communicate with the ocean’s powerful forces. The art of riding waves on wooden boards crafted from local trees was a testament to their skill, respect for nature, and intimate connection with the sea.

Today, the legacy of Hawaiian surfing culture is celebrated and preserved through various surfing programs that aim to share this heritage with new generations. Summertime Surf, for example, offers a variety of programs that incorporate the principles and spirit of Hawaiian surfing culture.

Keiki Camp
Hawaiian culture gave the world surfing, and Summertime Surf School honors that heritage with Keiki Surf Camp, a program just for “the little ones.” Keiki Surf Camp teaches kids how to have fun and be safe in the ocean while learning to surf. The program emphasizes not only the technical skills needed to ride waves but also instills a deep respect for the ocean and its ecosystems. Through storytelling and traditional Hawaiian practices, campers learn about the cultural significance of surfing and the values of courage, balance, and harmony with nature. Wahine Surf Weekend
The Wahine Surf Weekend is a special program dedicated to young women, or “wahine” in Hawaiian. This empowering weekend retreat provides the opportunity to connect with the ocean and each other. Participants are guided by experienced female instructors who share their passion for surfing and Hawaiian culture. The weekend includes surf lessons, yoga sessions, and discussions on the history and traditions of surfing, fostering a sense of community and sisterhood among the participants.
