🔥 Grom Teams June Intensive Advanced Surf Coaching for experienced, independent surfers. Summertime Grom Teams are for serious young athletes who want to make their surfing dreams into a reality.

Because September often brings large surf & varied conditions, the final week of September will be reserved for any cancelled sessions.
The Summer season starts on June 16th, where coaching sessions meet consistently on Mondays, Tuesdays & Wednesdays from 7:30 – 9am in Bradley Beach, Asbury Park & Point Pleasant.

About the Grom Teams
Summertime’s professional coaching staff leads New Jersey’s best up-and-coming surfers to achieve their surfing potential. Since 2008, the Grom Team program has provided the ultimate environment for rapid skills improvement under dedicated coaching. Former Grom Team members have developed their fundamentals and fine-tuned their skills to become regional, state, and national surfing champions. Some have gone on to become sponsored athletes, and others to become captains of collegiate surf teams. Accolades aside, coaches are most proud of the hard work and resulting life lessons that grom team members take with them as they mature from stoked kids to responsible young watermen and waterwomen.
The Coaching Staff
Grom Team directors Mark Gilmartin & Shaun McGrath have over 25 years of surf coaching experience and worldwide surf travel expertise between them. Together with Manasquan H.S.coach J.D. LaCarrubba and their assistant coaching staff, the Summertime coaching roster is made up of some of the area’s best surfers, many of whom were once team members themselves.

More info to help you understand how we adapt to NJ’s changing seasons:
🔥 September is NJ’s favorite month to be a surfer, and grom team offerings are at their peak. After the conclusion of the Summer Season, motivated surfers join the September Intensive After-School program. For performance surfers, this program is great preparation for competitive surfers before the ESA Easterns Surf Championships. For non-competitors, or those who are interested in year-round surfing, the September Intensive is the perfect bridge between Summer Teams & the Fall-Winter-Spring participation.
🍂 Fall-Winter-Spring Teams begin in October where sessions are called on when favorable conditions align after-school and on the weekends. The boots come on, and the surf gets bigger!
🎃 After Halloween, practice opportunities become more challenging due to limited after-school daylight. Please expect more weekend practices and local indoor training sessions.
❄️ The Winter season is both incredibly challenging and rewarding. Daylight is scarce and temperatures make surfing suited for only the truly dedicated. However, winter possesses incredible potential, as some of our most memorable practices come during those months for the more advanced surfers.
✈️ Surf travel is an important part of grom development. Summertime Grom Team Trips in the past have included the Outer Banks of North Carolina, Costa Rica, and to wavepools and other indoor facilities. We are looking forward to trips booked to Nicaragua and the pointbreaks of Southern Mexico in 2023 & 2024.
🌦️ When Spring returns, the daylight after school does as well, and Grom Team members can expect more opportunities for after-school and weekend practice sessions as we approach summer.
☀️ The Summer season begins a new year for the Grom Team and a return to the regular morning practice schedule. This will also mark the “graduation” of some team members who are given the opportunity to apply to become workers at Summertime Surf School.

The “skills evaluation” sessions serve as the most important dates for placing surfers with the best coaches for the various ability levels.
All team members from previous seasons are required to attend one, not both.

🔥 2025 June Intensive:
The June intensive helps surfers “jump start” their summer season with a focused practice schedule. This 3-week program is a great preparation for the 11-week summer season and is the first experience many “rookie” Grom team members have with the Grom Team.
*NEW MEMBERS: Tuesday practices serve as evaluation days for surfers who do not have an “STS Level” established.

At the conclusion of the Summer season, surfers are left to make a decision, “are they dedicated to developing their surfing skills year-round?” If the answer is yes, signing up for the FWS Grom Team is the best way to further their path of surfing excellence.
We do our best to call our FWS sessions ON during times when we think the conditions are ideal for the kids to learn and for us to coach. We use video review as much as possible as a tool to help the kids see what they are doing correctly and where their technique can be improved. Before the start of each session we talk with the team members to identify things for them to work on before the hit the water.

- 2 hours and 15 minutes
- 1 hour and 15 minutes of surfing
- 45 minutes of video review immediately following our surf session, to occur at the STS office (404 Ocean Ave in Belmar).
- Group size of 6 surfers or less to maximize the ability to record and review waves in a group setting. Video clips can be made available to the kids at the end of each session.
- We found the most efficient & effective way for rapid skill development is with immediate feedback and video review sessions
- Surf + video review sessions will be designed for specific surfer skill sets (advanced-intermediate)

During the Fall-Winter-Spring season, the Grom Team offers a “rolling admissions” approach to joining the team. That is, we accept new team members throughout the seasons on a case-by-case basis.
FWS Grom Team practices may serve as an opportunity to try out for the team. Interested members arrive early for an in-person consultation with coaching staff so that we can take the time to prepare each surfer and set their expectations for what skills we will be looking for the surfer to demonstrate.
If your surfer makes the team, they’ll have the opportunity to register as an official team member. See membership information below.
How to Join the FWS Team:
- Above-average physical fitness is imperative.
- Independent surfing ability required. Must have experience catching waves without assistance to qualify for tryouts.
